Taylor Swift's re-recording of '1989' dominates UK music charts

American musician Taylor Swift's re-recording of her Grammy-winning blockbuster album "1989" shot to the top of the UK singles and albums charts.

Nine years to the day the original album was released in 2014, the 21-track "1989" (Taylor's Version), which was released last Friday, debuted at No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart with "184,000 chart units, more than double that of the original 1989's opening-week sales of 90,000," according to a statement from the Official Charts Company.

But that's only the beginning. Additionally, Taylor claims the largest debut week of any record released this year."

Five previously unheard "From the Vault" tracks, including "Is It Over Now?", which peaked at number one on the Official Singles Chart with 4.9 million plays, are included on the new CD. "Now That We Don't Talk" and "Slut!" were the next two, ranking No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

With singles like "Shake It Off" and "Blank Space," Swift's fifth album "1989" topped international charts and won her album of the year, best pop vocal album, and best music video for "Bad Blood" at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

After leaving the Big Machine record label in 2019, the singer-songwriter lost possession of the master recordings of her first six albums, which led to a contentious and public disagreement with the label's new owner, music executive Scooter Braun. As a result, she has started releasing reissues of her older work.

Swift's master recordings were sold by Braun to a private equity firm for an alleged sum of more than $300 million.
